Description

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the leading U.N. development unit in the world established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1965. UNDP is a hub for international development in more than 170 countries and territories, supporting States in leaving poverty behind, ending inequalities and strengthening institutions as the way to sustainable development. Ranging from democratic governance, institutional reform, crisis recovery, climate action and capacity building to many other critical areas, it aims to strengthen the long-term resilience of all people to ensure less impact and less harm on peoples' lives in response to a crisis in different parts of the world. UNDP still provides policy advice, technical assistance and innovative development choices to build and consolidate inclusive, transparent and effective governance systems together to tackle the challenges of the modern world.

One of the key priorities of UNDP as part of this mandate is Democracy governance, which is perceived as an effective component of sustainable development and good political climate and public trust. But in a polarized, distrustful world of ersatz people, disinterested institutions, and mistrusted transparency and accountability, for democratic systems there is an increasing need to evolve, adapt. The discussions in the agenda item “Improving Democratic Governance and Democratic Institutions” will be tied with the structural, political and social problems of a democratic institution on global level. Delegates will analyze and explore the drivers of institutional fragility and democratic backsliding; and recommend a comprehensive package for enhanced accountability, greater inclusiveness, strengthening institutions and greater citizen engagement. Also to be addressed will be issues relating to the significance of "effective, legitimate" democratic governance frameworks in rapidly changing societies and ways it can help sustain and strengthen key democratic principles.
