Description

The Secretariat of the United Nations (UN) in 1997 resolved to merge the United Nations Drug Control Programme and the Centre for International Crime Prevention (UNICC) into the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) to increase the effectiveness of the UN to address drug control, transnational crimes and international terrorism. Supplies legal and technical help, framing up of policy, training and formulation of frameworks and cooperation to member countries to assist their criminal justice system and global security.

Trafficking in persons is a high priority programme of UNODC, and a serious instance of transnational crime and human rights violation. The trafficking networks are international and trans-border and trafficking resultant incidents of trafficking, exploitation and violence can occur amongst victims. UNODC is very actively engaged in prevention, victim protection and prosecution both in international legal and on cooperation.

In the topic session “Global Dimension and Effects of Human Trafficking”, the emphasis is on the economic, social and humanitarian dimension of trafficking which has a global dimension. It will discuss some concepts on trafficking networks and structural factors (inequality, lack of good governance) as well as the need to better strengthen bilateral cooperation, Protection and Prevention at the origin of trafficking of victims of trafficking.
